Spring Cleaning + Moving Tips

HOW ON EARTH is it already May ?? I am a little behind on spring cleaning — with finals, my internship, working, etc I kept putting it on the back burner, which was a huge mistake. HOWEVER, I am currently in the process of moving out of the sorority house SO it is a perfect time to clean everything I own (literally) while organizing and getting rid of/donating things I no longer need.

Normally, we are allowed to keep our furniture and whatnot in our rooms over the summer, but housing is deep cleaning all of the houses this year so we have to move everything out. I was not expecting this BUT I feel relieved that I have to go through all of the stuff I’ve accumulated over the past couple years at school. I am officially done with my finals, so I am diving right into the organization world!

This year, I want to do it right — which means I’m not going to just throw everything into garbage bags with the plan of sorting through everything once I move it into my parents’ house. This is a pretty big task, so I figured I would post some tips that I’m learning as I go! I’m moving back onto Greek Row in the fall, but next year, P and I will be getting an apartment so I’m excited to adapt some habits that will also help with that transition.

  • Have a game plan. What is your main goal? Are you moving or are you just trying to clean up? Where is it all going? Are you storing it at your parents’ or in a storage unit or are you keeping it in your house?

  • Research donation opportunities. You’re most likely going to wind up with a pile of junk that you no longer need — use this as an opportunity to. help local neighbors in need!

  • Organize section by section. Pick a place to start and finish that completely before moving on. I started with my bulky furniture (dresser, bookcases, coat stand, then packed my wall decor, then moved onto the bathroom, then evaluated the clothing situation, etc.

  • Set aside what you don’t plan on using in the next 2 months. I found a lot of winter clothing at the bottom of my hamper that I clearly won’t need until late fall, so I put all of the warm clothes into a separate, labelled container. This will make moving in so much easier, too!

  • Use reusable containers. They’re better for the environment and you will be able to reuse them for future cleaning! I bought a few cheap ones at Walmart for $5 to put in the garage and then a few nicer ones to put under my bed.

  • Deep clean when you’re completely finished. Sweep, vacuum, dust, windex, wipe down…do it all!lllll so you feel like it is ~finished~.

  • LIGHT A DANG CANDLE AND ENJOY YOUR CLEAN SPACE.
