Honeymooners in Mexico

We! Are! Married!

Oh, how CRAZY it feels to type that. What a month it’s been! Our wedding was on August 14th (can’t wait to share photos, it was a dream!), we left for our honeymoon on August 15th and then we moved to Florida on August 21st…and we have not caught our breath yet. Sooo many life changes all at once!

I wanted to quickly hop on and share our honeymoon experience with y’all. P and I have been about as cautious as one could be with COVID, so we were extremely hesitant in booking our honeymoon. Like, I think by the time we actually booked everything it was nearly mid-June. We picked Riviera Maya, Mexico because it seemed like the safest out-of-country option — we were able to book a direct flight there, then had a very short layover on the way home and our resort had great safety measures in place.

But y’all…30 minutes before our flight left Nashville, we were getting ready to leave the airport and go back to our apartment. When we booked our resort, we also paid for private transfers to/from the airport. We sent the transfer company our info multiple times between June-August, but they never responded or sent us our confirmation number! Neither of us had been to Mexico before, so the combination of not knowing the area and not wanting to risk public transportation left us terrified of landing in Mexico with no ride. After hours of calling the resort and the transfer company, Peyton was finally able to receive the confirmation but GOODNESS — the stress. Absolutely terrifying. And yes, we did wear matching pullover sweatshirts to the airport with the name of the lake we got married on.

Anyway. We stayed at the Excellence Riviera Maya and it was more perfect than we could have imagined. Our room had a private rooftop plunge pool and we had the dreamiest views from the little porch attached to our room. Pro tip, take a polaroid camera! My #1 thing was that I didn’t want us to be carrying our phones everywhere, but naturally we wanted to document our honeymoon. I wish we would have packed more film, but our precious polaroids are so special and my favorite thing we brought home with us!<3

Neither of us had stayed at an all-inclusive resort so we didn’t entirely know what to expect. I was absolutely positive that the food would taste like frozen cafeteria food, but it did NOT. Everything was so incredibly tasty, from the lox bagels and chocolate chip waffles in bed to escargot at the French restaurant to ceviche at the beachfront restaurant.

We ventured off property and found delicious paletas and the cutest town with street markets galore — even found a souvenir with our university’s name and logo on it, so of course we had to make a few purchases!

P and I are already trying to make excuses to go back — one month married? Let’s go! Random weekend trip? See you there!
